Cafe Culture is a painting that depicts my family enjoying an afternoon snack at a Hong Kong cafe in the suburbs of Toronto. The people come for the food and it is a very casual atmosphere. This painting acts as a time capsule as these types of establishments begin to disappear. This type of Canto-Western cuisine has a special sense of nostalgia for me as an immigrant from Hong Kong. With all the noise and hustle-bustle around us, we are in our own little family bubble. It is endearing when I see my kids also take a liking to this type of food. By letting them have an appreciation of their own culture, we hope they will also value the diversity in others. Just like the food which brings back good memories for me, this painting captures the same feelings of tender sweetness.

Coconut Dreams
info

Coconut Dreaming - During the pandemic, the one thing my child misses the most is traveling, especially to a tropical destination. When he was at my sister’s house, he was given a coconut to drink from and after he took his first sip, he expressed the utmost satisfaction which made him feel like he was transported to the Caribbean. I want to capture that feeling of happiness and pure joy he had simply by tasting something. Food and taste can conjure up such real memories and it is this sensory experience that I want to evoke and I want the audience to feel as well.

Going Home
info

Going Home - The work features my son getting piggybacked by his father going home during the Fall. Fall signifies change and how children are always changing. The viewer can tell the season through the autumn colours, cool light, and the outwear of the figures. My son is holding on to a baseball and leaves while my husband has a baseball bat. It signifies how parents teach children and have their own hopes and dreams embedded in them. My son's pants have tears to show imperfections in life.
